Edited by Robert Mayhew

Robert Mayhew has edited an unique compilation of the best of Ayn Rand's question and answer periods. The Q&As are categorized into chapters drawn around broad themes such as politics, ethics, metaphysics and epistemology, aesthetics, etc., and then into smaller sub-sections.

We can hear, almost, Ayn Rand on: ethics, economics, modern art, Vietnam, libertarians, liberals, religious conservatives, Hollywood, atheism, Don Quixote, abortion, love and marriage, Ronald Reagan, philosophy, pollution, foreign policy, Communism, racism, feminism, capitalism, prostitution, gun control, homosexuality, reason and rationality, literature, drug use, crime and punishment, freedom of the press, Richard Nixon, political principles, the new Left, Bobby Fisher, comedy, suicide, masculinity, sports, Mark Twain, and many more.

The volume also provides a snap shot of Ayn Rand as a person, at different times, responding to different issues. On display are her wit, warmth, patience as well as indignation and her brilliance.

Dr. Harry Binswanger, a longtime associate of Ayn Rand, is a professor of philosophy at the Objectivist Academic Center of the Ayn Rand Institute, recently read the book and selected a sample set of Q&As from the book. Read the selection on Capitalism Magazine. Ayn Rand Answers by Harry Binswanger  (September 1, 2009)

Here are a few questions and answers.

Q: How do you face your own mortality?
AR: I don't. I won't be here to know it when it happens. I'm concerned only with the time when I *am* here. Mortality, by definition, finishes me. So why worry about it?

Q: Is there a good reason for going to the moon?
AR: Yes, the extension of knowledge.

Q: Concerning pollution, what is the property status of air and water?
AR: I'm against all *preventive* government controls. Let people demonstrate an actual harm, and then sue the individual polluter.

Q: How can you account for life and the wonders of the universe on the basis of accident or chance, without the concept of design?
AR: I suggest you identify the meaning of every concept you use. There is no design in nature. The consistency of nature, the fact that nature follows certain laws, is not a product of design but of the Law of Identity . . .

Q: This question is going to sound silly . . .
AR: Never apologize for your own thoughts, and don't estimate them for me in advance.
