“We The Living”

Venue: Seminar Hall, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi 110016
Date and Time: Sunday, 25 September 2011, 11 am to 3 pm
Based on Ayn Rands' debut novel, this 1942 film starring Alida Valli and Rossano Brazzi has a checkered history. It was made in Italy during World War II, without Ayn Rand's knowledge or permission and was based on an unauthorized Italian translation of the novel. Surprisingly, it was a cult hit in Italy at the time of its release, but was soon banned by the Mussolini regime, and the film was mostly forgotten.
Ayn Rand’ friends and lawyers, Erika and Mark Holzer rediscovered the film in Italy in the 1950s. Decades later, Duncan Scott helped restore the film and re-edit it for release under Ayn Rand's guidance. The result is a beautiful recreation of the novel that rivets you with its outstanding performances. The film is in Italian, with sub-titles in English. One can read a brief history of the rediscovery of the film there - The Banned, Lost, Rediscovered: Ayn Rand's “We the Living” Lives on! Fore more information about the film, visit We the Living website.
A selection of excerpts from reviews of the film "We the Living" published in international newspapers and magazines are available here.
"Hugely entertaining," wrote the Los Angeles Times, and Sneak Previews called it, "An amazing piece of cinema ... I think you will fall under the spell of this film".
"Screen romance doesn't come any better than this .. Suppressed by Mussolini's fascists and long forgotten, it is not being celebrated as the lost classic that it is." - New York Newsday
